Stories of impact
Changing Lives Through Sight-Saving Care
KCCO’s evidence-based community eye health programmes improve lives not just through data and systems, but through the personal stories of children and adults whose futures are transformed. This is the story of Michael, an 8-month-old boy from Eastern Uganda whose world became brighter thanks to timely care and partnership.

Before care
Meet the Patient
Michael was born prematurely after a difficult pregnancy. At 5 months, his mother noticed he was not seeing well. Despite receiving a referral from Mbale Hospital, financial struggles and personal challenges delayed her ability to seek treatment at Benedictine Eye Hospital (BEH) in Tororo—47 km away.

The Turning Point
Accessing Treatment
When Michael’s mother arrived at BEH as a walk-in patient, she was enrolled for financial support through KCCO’s programme. Michael underwent bilateral cataract surgery and was fitted with spectacles.

Outcome
The Outcome
The change was immediate and profound. Michael’s mother noticed he could now reach for toys directly instead of fumbling. He became more playful and alert. His world—and future—opened up.
“He’s so much more playful now. He can grab things directly in front of him.” — Michael’s mother

After Care
Ongoing Support
Michael’s journey isn’t over. His spectacles will need adjusting, and he’ll require ongoing follow-up to monitor vision and manage any complications. At KCCO, follow-up care is a vital part of every childhood cataract programme—because restoration of sight doesn’t end in the operating theatre.

Implications
Broader Impact
Thanks to KCCO’s partnership with BEH:
- Community awareness about childhood blindness has increased
- Human resource capacity at BEH has grown
- Cost and transportation barriers for families are being reduced
- Referral networks across Eastern Uganda have been strengthened
