Training and Capacity Building

Examples of Capacity Strengthening in Practice

KCCO’s role as a WHO Collaboration Centre for Trachoma

As a WHO Collaborating Centre for Trachoma at the University of Cape Town, KCCO helps countries with Ministries of Health through leadership training and workshops to prepare WHO elimination dossiers.

Leadership and Outreach Management

Leadership and management courses focused on designing, implementing, and sustaining community outreach programmes responsive to population needs.

Ophthalmic Equipment Maintenance

Practical training in ophthalmic equipment repair and preventive maintenance to improve equipment uptime and reduce service disruptions in partner hospitals.

Community-Based Identification and Referral

Training women’s microfinance group members and community health volunteers as eye health ambassadors to strengthen early identification and referral pathways between communities and formal eye care services.

Enhanced Surgical Exposure for Trainees

Support for ophthalmology trainees and their supervisors to rotate through high-volume surgical sites in Tanzania, improving hands-on experience while addressing cataract backlogs in underserved regions.

Programme Management Training

Direct training and mentorship for programme managers, patient counsellors, and Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Coordinators to strengthen outreach planning, case management, monitoring, and community engagement.

KCCO strengthens eye health systems by investing in the skills and leadership of eye health professionals across sub-Saharan Africa, strengthening the institutions in which they work.

Beyond formal courses, KCCO emphasizes ongoing mentorship and peer-to-peer learning. Our technical team provide structured mentorship to programme managers, clinical leaders, and coordinators, while facilitating cross-site exchanges that enable institutions to learn directly from one another.
