What we do
Program planning and implementation
KCCO supports governments, NGOs, and hospitals to develop sustainable community ophthalmology programmes that reduce avoidable blindness. By strengthening programme management within eye departments, providing mentorship, and supporting outreach services, KCCO helps expand access to quality eye care while addressing barriers such as distance, cost, and limited awareness.
Pediatric Eye Care
KCCO applies the same systems-based model to pediatric eye care. A distinctive feature is the integration of a Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Coordinator within partner institutions. This role strengthens early identification, referral pathways, case management, and follow-up across the continuum of care. By bridging clinical services and community structures, including schools and primary health services, this model supports timely access, continuity of care, and improved functional and educational outcomes for children.
In Practice
KCCO has supported programme implementation and outreach system strengthening across multiple countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Examples include:
Strengthening outreach planning and referral systems in regional eye departments in Benin, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Embedding Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Coordinators in tertiary hospitals in Burundi, Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Strengthening hospital–community linkages in rural districts to address transportation and awareness barriers to cataract surgery uptake.
