Capacity Building and Training

Addressing the Challenges of Childhood Cataract

Congenital and developmental cataract is the leading cause of childhood blindness in Africa. Despite this, children continue to experience significant barriers to care—including late presentation, poor post-operative follow-up, and limited access to essential visual aids like spectacles and low vision devices.

Hosted by the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) in Moshi, Tanzania, this course addresses these challenges directly. It draws on recent research and the outcomes of the “Childhood Cataract Experts Meeting” to provide participants with tested and practical solutions for building responsive and equitable paediatric cataract services.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the global and regional burden of childhood cataract

  • Learn evidence-based approaches to surgical management, including age, IOL use, anesthesia, and cost

  • Identify and address barriers to early presentation for surgery

  • Develop referral systems and strategies to improve case identification and flow

  • Establish follow-up protocols and determine responsible personnel

  • Design child tracking systems to prevent patients from being lost to follow-up
